About the product
The Ecocamel Orbit is an energy saving shower head attachment which can be used with all shower types.
The shower head creates a vortex within the unusual hoop shaped wand, increasing the water pressure while reducing the amount of water used. The Orbit also has an integrated water softener to combat hard water which can cause limescale and dry skin.
When I was asked to review the Ecocamel Orbit shower head I was intrigued. With 4 and a bit of us in the house there are lights, appliances and electricals sucking up power at all times of the day and night, so anything which helps to save money on our bills is a plus.
My first impression of the product were very positive. Ecocamel have gone to a lot of effort to design packaging which lets you know exactly what to expect from the product, what its advantages are and how to keep it clean. This is a little thing but it makes me so happy when I open a product and don’t have to play “Guess what I do”. I do have to admit that once I moved on from the packaging I immediately thought that the shower head itself looked like some sort of scanning device from Star Trek. I had to resist the urge to walk around the house with it making “beep” noises, but I digress. I actually love the design, I wouldn’t have thought there was much you could do to make a shower head look good but the Orbit succeeds.
I tested the shower head on an electric shower with variable pressure however the Orbit is compatible with all showers (With the exception of showers with extremely low pressure). With the Orbit being a hoop shape I didn’t have high hopes for the water coverage. I imagined that it would create a halo of water which wouldn’t provide the same level of cleaning as a regular shower head, however the nozzles on the Orbit are angled so that the water streams almost create a mini Whirlpool in the air.
When I finished marveling at the way the water flowed and actually got into the shower, I was at first a little disappointed. I live in an extremely hard water area, we have lots of problems with lime scale and the same minerals which cause this make water feel different to soft water areas. I was looking forward to the lovely soft bubbly water I had experienced elsewhere in the country, so when the shower felt no different than normal it was a let down. That is, before I decided to experiment with the water pressure. I normally put the water pressure up nearly as far as it will go in order to get a good shower, but I wanted to test the water saving features of the Orbit so I turned the pressure down to a setting which would have made it impossible for me to get soap out of my hair with my normal shower head. This is when the Orbit came into its own. Not only did the Orbit still put out a very pleasant flow of water but at the lower pressure I found the lovely soft water I had been hoping for.
If I had to guess, I would say that with the pressure turned down I was using around a third of the water I normally would have and despite my being the sort of person who likes their shower to have a bit of oomp! I was perfectly content with the water flow and quite impressed with the technology which could turn a trickle into a respectable shower.
All in all I’m very happy with this product. It is a little on the expensive side, however as it only uses about a third of the water I would normally use, and the soft water technology will ensure that in hard water areas it lasts longer and requires descaling less often, I believe it is worth the money.
