Now that baby is nearly 8 months old I’ve found that I no longer need to watch her like a hawk 24/7, instead I can sit back, relax, and watch her like the crazy, obsessive woman that I am.
As a result, a few of my pre-pregnancy hobbies have been making a re-appearance in my life. I’ve started playing the piano (very badly) again, I’ve been thinking about completing a couch to 5k on my much neglected running machine… although thinking is as far as I’ve got! and I’ve also decided to start drawing again.
Back in the day I went to art school, but since then my meager skills have been left to rust while I did more practical things like Project Management. Given that I no longer have that particular distraction I have decided to dust off my art supplies and get drawing again. The problem is that drawing is more like exercising than riding a bike, in that, if you don’t use it you lose it! So, to get back into shape I’ve bought a 25 page cartridge pad and for the next few weeks I will be doing the artistic equivalent of hardcore training. The challenge is to fill each page with an pencil sketch, finishing with the same sketch I started with so that I can see my progress.
I struggled to decide on what the subject of sketch one should be and in the end I didn’t make the best choice. The sketch is supposed to be Emma Watson as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. The first problem with this sketch is glaringly obvious… It doesn’t look anything like Emma Watson, this is partly because the source photo was quite fuzzy making it hard to see the contours of her face properly, but it’s also due to simple lack of practice. In addition the proportions of the face, in particular the profile line, are way off. My pencil work has also gone to pot but I was expecting it to be much, much worse. Hopefully I’ll be much happier with my final sketch than I have been with this first one.
If you have any suggestions of what/who I should draw next please leave me a comment as I’m struggling to come up with ideas!
